The development of single-crystal nickel-based superalloys of 2nd to 5th generation by processing the polycrystalline materials was presented. The properties of the superalloys and microstructural changes occuring during creep tests under laboratory and service conditions were presented. In particular, the microstructural stability of the superalloys was discussed. A significant progress in the development of the Ni-based single-crystal superalloys resulted in a supply of new turbine-blade materials with improved creep strength as well as oxidation and thermo-mechanical fatigue resistance. At 850 deg C, depending on the stress level, the microstructure of single crystal nickel-base alloys begins to become unstable with respect to the morphology of gamma-prime precipitates. Rafting of gamma-prime particles takes place both under service conditions in turbine blades as well as under laboratory conditions. The evolution of precipitate shape is most pronounced at early stages of creep.
