There has been a steadily growing interest in projects involving gas fuelled engines on ships during the last 6-7 years, and DNV has been fortunate to play a part in much of it. In this paper we share some of our interesting knowledge and experience on these gas engine installations. Passenger ferries: The Glutra car ferry was the first LNG fuelled ferry in the world, finished in January 2000. It was in January 2007 followed by five new LNG fuelled ferries, and more ferries of similar type will come in Norway. Owners of larger passenger vessels (RoPax) and cargo vessels (RoRo) are also showing interest in gas as a fuel for propulsion, and there is for instance a joint industry research project called BigLNG going on in Norway, where the use of gas as fuel is explored for large passenger and cargo vessel, the scope of this project will be outlined. Inter city passenger vessels are also considered in some cities. Stockholm City seriously considered biogas fuelled passenger vessels, but the funding for this was stopped due to change in the political leadership. Cargo vessels: The first LNG fuelled cargo vessels in the world apart from LNG carriers were two supply vessels equipped with dual fuel gas engines, delivered in 2003, these will now be followed by a new supply vessel, also to owner Eidesvik, to be delivered in August 2007. In Norway also a coast guard vessel is planned with gas propulsion in combination with a diesel engine. The layout and solutions for this vessel is presented. LNG carriers: The LNG tanker market is a very interesting one when it comes to the use of gas engines, and today gas carriers are actually built with other propulsion solutions than dual fuel steam boilers, and we will look into the progress. Rules and regulations: DNV rules for classification of gas fuelled engine installations in ships were introduced already in January 2001, and in this paper we display the main contents of these requirements, and also the latest updates. DNV has been involved in the work within IMO on international regulations for gas engine installations; a work that has been headed by Norwegian authorities. A first draft was submitted to IMO in 2004, a correspondence group worked on it in 2005, and a second correspondence group was formed in the IMO BLG10 meeting in London in April 2006, reporting to the next BLG meeting in 2007.
