Hydrogen storage systems and their components are tested and certified according to a variety of codes and standards. These processes significantly reduce the probability of severe failures. Nevertheless, long-term reliability and operation under extreme conditions require further investigations. Especially, very low and very high temperatures, fast filling and fast draining, mechanical shocks, ageing by long-term operation or cycling occur in automotive applications. Lessons learned from exemplary tests show the benefit of respective advanced test programs. The development of hydrogen-powered vehicles is still in progress. A close cooperation of OEMs, component and system suppliers and test institutions is required to avoid severe setbacks and to reduce the costs for research, development and production. Examples for liquid hydrogen (LH2) and gaseous hydrogen up to more than 1000 bar (CGH2) testing are given. A continuous surveillance of hydrogen storage systems can indicate deterioration of its structure. The more sensors are in use the better the information about the system will be. With suitable sensors unusual strains or abnormal deformation can be detected as well as hot spots or hydrogen concentrations. At ET EnergieTechnologie recently fibre optic sensors were tested, which showed promising results. These sensors can be embedded in composite materials without weakening the structures. By optical means one single fibre can measure tens of temperatures, strains and other measurement values. The multitude of data allows the generation of a detailed image of the equipped component or tank and therefore an early detection of potential weakness and arising failure.
