At the cargo area of Munich Airport, Proton Motor operates a fuel cell driven fork lift truck. The fuel cell system is based on PM's proprietary PEM fuel cell design and is used in a fuel cell - ultracapacitor hybrid configuration. The project aims and results are reported in this paper. The fuel cell hybrid fork lift truck was developed by Proton Motor as project leader together with Still GmbH and Linde AG, Gas Division. The project was funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. The capability and performance of lead acid battery fork lifts was achieved by a fuel cell hybrid solution and demonstrated in a fork lift from series production. In principle the fuel cell system shows the idea of 'refuel instead of recharge'. This concept solves the problem of 8 hours battery charging by refilling a hydrogen tank within 2 minutes.
