Statistical analysis of the role of distraction as a causal factor in traffic accidents appears to be rather complex. This can be assigned to firstly a restricted access to accident records as a result of protective insurance policies. Secondly to lacking standardisation of especially qualitative accident causation data, which results in data being incomparable. Finally, the complexity of accident causation a rather continuous decision making process with the driver being ultimately responsible. A steady increase of traffic density, combined with a rise in the use of information and communication systems and the consistent consumer desire for high productivity while driving has resulted in Driver Distraction being an important contributing factor in accident causation. MMI solutions, such as automation/deletion of (driving-) tasks or optimization of single interaction cycles regarding required resources, have to be referred to as bottom-up approaches. The driver remains to play the decisive role in resource allocation. No matter how efficient single interaction cycles are designed, untimely task execution may still lead to distraction occurrence. Improper resource allocation often is the result of a lack of sustained situation awareness and -expectancy. A top-down approach is established when providing the driver of integrative, predictive and to a certain extend continuous feedback regarding situation criticality. This should, effectively, result in optimized strategies for distraction-low resource allocation and task intertwining.
