The development of the new 32/44CR engine was guided by current and future needs in the marine and stationary diesel engine market. The result is a combination of continuous development of the proven design concept of the 32/40 combined with remarkable technical innovations and modular systems. With the in house developed key technologies of fuel injection systems, electronics and turbocharger a perfect integration based on customer demands was achieved by MAN B&W's development process with strategic release steps and component validation. The efficient, clean and compact engine shows future oriented performance level with high power density, robust and matured design, intelligent modularity and a high degree of flexibility for different customer applications. With the power of 560kW/cyl and a power density of 26.9 bar mean effective pressure a new dimension with best in class values can be achieved. The engine is from the beginning equipped exclusively with the matured innovation of the modular common rail injection system, which allows a high degree of flexibility for optimization towards environmental and economical aspects. The user aspects for service operation are supported by the electronic control system, which offers the possibility for a online satellite service connection. The paper presents the technical objectives, detailed design innovations, flexibilty towards environmental and economical data and the experiences during development validation.
