Emission regulations for ships are getting more and more strict, e.g. SECA areas and Tier 2. Consequently, a project was started to study the possibilities of a scrubber system. As a first step a comprehensive test of an AVC (Advanced Vortex Chamber) scrubber has been performed in the MAN Diesel test facilities in Holeby, Denmark. The next major step will be to install an AVC on board a ship. For this first test, a typical 1 MW GenSet was used operating on heavy fuel (HFO) with 2.3 % sulphur. The AVC was designed especially for the test, and the water used was seawater from the Baltic Sea. During some of the tests, salts were added. The test was carried out with the standard ISO 8178 loads and emission measurements of NOX, HC, CO and PM were carried out before and after the AVC - giving the opportunity to calculate the trapping effi- ciencies. The scrubber water was sampled and analysed for metals, PAH (Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons) and oil.
