'Committee on combustion of low-grade bunker fuel' formed in Japanese Marine Equipment Association is made up of the authors for this paper. This paper introduces its research activities under the subsidy of The Nippon Foundation. Setting of SECA (SOx Emission Control Area) in the world will increase demand of low sulfur bunker fuel in the near future. The cheapest way to make a low sulfur fuel is to blend the low sulfur CLO (Clarified oil) to the base stocks. CLO is FCC slurry oil from that almost all cat-fines are separated. CLO has such the characteristics as high density, relatively low viscosity, low sulfur but high aromaticity. By mixing CLO, apparently good fuel, low sulfur and low viscosity fuel can be made. However the ignition and combustion characteristics deteriorates because of high aromaticity. This committee has two aims. 1. To estimate how poor the ignition and combustion become by mixing much CLO. 2. To develop the new measure to improve the bunker fuel combustion, providing against the appearance of such CLO-rich fuels. Research procedure is as follows. 1. CLO-rich fuels are made in the laboratory by mixing some samples of CLO and VR (Vacuum Residue) and their ignition and combustion quality are tested using three FIAs (Fuel Ignition Analysers). 2. Trouble-making bunker fuels are sampled from some troubled ships and their ignition and combustion quality are also tested using the same FIAs as for the CLO-rich fuels. 3. Comparing the FIA data between from 1. and 2., possibility that the CLO-rich fuels will be troublemaking is clarified. 4. Using a visual test engine, improvement of the CLO-rich fuel combustion by raising up the fuel injection pressure is examined. Because of recent rise of the crude oil price, the number of FCC plants is increasing. It indicates that too much CLO will overflow from the refineries in the world. It is another reason for the deterioration of bunker fuel quality in the future. Shipping companies and ship and engine builders should cooperate to provide against this trend. On the other hand, fortunately the electronic controlled fuel injection system will become popular in the near future. In this paper, how to burn safely the lowgrade bunker fuels utilizing the new injection system is discussed.
