Particular problem in the shafting alignment design of the large merchant ships is to ensure stable performance of the stern tube bearing and adequate loading condition of the three aftmost diesel engine bearings for all operating condition of the ship. The shaft alignment problem is related to the propulsion shafting sensitivity to small disturbances in the supporting bearing offsets. The primary contributor to the bearing offset disturbances on the vessel in operation is from the hull girder deflections as the result of a change of the loading condition of the vessel. The ability to account for hull deflections in early design stage of the alignment a matter of utmost importance in order to ensure robust alignment design, and consequently, fewer alignment-related casualties. This article addresses alignment problems associated with the above and in particular the issue of the main engine bearing loading relative to the ballast and full load operation.
