Recently, the tendency of quality of marine residual fuel oil is getting inferior with inflating crude oil prices, level up of petroleum refinery technology (demand for light oils has been increasing) and so on. Low-quality marine fuel oil (MFO) actually has various deterioration of the fuel property. It can not judge from general properties like metal components, micro carbon residue and so on. Above all, being paid attention very much in diesel engine is the deterioration of ignitability and combustibility of MFO. It leads to reduce diesel engine reliability. At worst, there is a possibility to cause serious engine troubles such as abnormal wear, piston ring and cylinder liner damage. Now there is no international standard regarding ignitability and/or combustibility of MFO. Therefore, fuel oil suppliers do not need to pay attention about ignitability and combustibility in the refinement process of crude oil with which MFO is made. Energy Institute (EI) has already standardized the method of testing ignition and combustion characteristics of MFO by using constant volume combustion chamber to date. However, a technical evaluation method concerning the ignition and combustion quality of MFO has not been established yet. And, it is not made clear when such an evaluation method is re- flected in the actual international standard. In such a situation, ship operators supply the fuel oil to their ships. They cannot wait until it will be standardized by International Organization for Standardization (ISO). If there is a MFO which has bad ignition and combustion properties, user needs to handle it to minimize the engine trouble. This paper describes the result that investigated the ignition and combustion characteristic by FIA (Fuel Ignition analyzer) analysis and general properties etc. about for actual MFO of more than 300 for about 2 and half years. And, from these results, the relations among the tendency of ignitability and combustibility, general properties and the trouble cases etc. are investigated. In addition, the method of avoiding the combustion trouble by MFO that has bad ignitability and combustibility is also investigated.
