The railway is economic lifelines of country. Chinese economic fast development requires the railway's transport capacity and the locomotive's reliability to be improved. Chinese railway locomotive has gone through large-scale speed-up for five times. With the wide application of large power diesel locomotive, the railway locomotive engine lube with high performances becomes the key to improve the railway's transport capacity and reliability. As the electric ejector technology is used for locomotive, the requirements on engine oils become more and more severe in order to meet the requirements of environmental protection legislation. The present status of Chinese railway locomotive and its lube oil used in diesel locomotive engine are described in this article. The performances of zinccontaining locomotive the generation V diesel engine oil, developed by Petro-China Lubricant Company, are presented. A comparison about performances between zinc-containing and zinc-free locomotive the generation V diesel engine oil during the field test is made. The field test shows that zinc-containing locomotive the generation V diesel engine oil can extend the drain period, with excellent anti-oxidative and antiwear properties. The zinc-containing diesel locomotive the generation V diesel engine oil is more adaptive to non-silver bearing, which has been used for railway locomotive in China. At last, some suggestions on how to develop and use the Chinese railway locomotive engine oil are given.
