The AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture (AUTOSAR) initiative aims to develop an open standardized software architecture for automotive electronics. This architecture is being developed by a partnership of automotive manufacturers, suppliers and tool providers. More than 100 companies worldwide are contributing currently to the AUTOSAR work. The partnership is focused on managing the growing complexity in the development of automotive electric/electronic architectures, with the aim of both enabling new technologies and improving development efficiency - without making compromises on quality and corporate identity. This paper presents an overview over the development partnership as well as the technical concept and the methodology. It points out the benefits of the de-facto standard for all stakeholders. In particular it explains the layered architecture, which decouples applications from the hardware via standardized basic software. Furthermore it emphasizes on several new and innovative concepts, e.g. the virtual functional bus or the configuration methods. The paper also presents the AUTOSAR templates. These system, ECU, or software component related templates describe the required design features at the corresponding level. They will be used in the AUTOSAR development methodology from system design to the generation of the executable ECU binary. The paper closes with an outlook to the exploitation of the standard and to the objectives in terms of the further development of AUTOSAR.
