The energy loss during the propagation of an acoustic signal through the tribounit of a bearing ring and a wheel-pair axis can have two causes: (i) limited transparency of the layer between a ring and an axle, a parameter that is different for different gaps (different tightnesses), and (ii) reflection that arises at the ring-axle boundary owing to a difference in the elastic-wave velocities in the stressed ring metal and the unstressed axle metal. A model for propagation of acoustic waves through a tribounit of the interior ring of a bearing and a wheel pair axle is developed and calculated. The energy loss determined both by the limited transparency of a layer between the ring and the axle for different degrees of tightness and by reflection from the ring-axle boundary are considered in relation to the difference between the elastic-wave velocities in stressed ring metal and unstressed axle metal. Conclusions are made and recommendations are given for using the studied correlations in the developed acoustic tightness tests.
