The project CUTE (Clean Urban Transport for Europe) comprised the operation of 27 fuel cell buses and their hydrogen infrastructures for two years under everyday conditions. Three buses each were located in nine cities. Every site had a hydrogen refuelling station (350 bar rated pressure), and most of the facilities included a plant for on-site generation of the fuel (steam methane reforming or water electrolysis). This paper focuses on the experiences with hydrogen infrastructure operation. Quantitative characteristics such as availability, energy efficiency, and hydrogen losses are discussed. Problems during the operating phase are outlined and challenges for future work are highlighted. The hydrogen supply infrastructures proved to be viable and reliable in general. The production units with electrolysers performed well, those with steam reformers clearly did not fulfil expectations. The hydrogen compressors turned out to be the most critical component of the station units. Energy demand and hydrogen losses must be reduced in future. Operators were in general satisfied with the performance of the infrastructure installations. The level of their individual satisfaction reflects the availability of the particular local facility. Bus operators that had previous experiences with CNG-powered vehicles and refuelling installations pointed out that there were no fundamental differences between CNG and hydrogen infrastructures. Contingency arrangements for backup supply were vital. Enhanced system integration, simplification, and standardisation of the infrastructure facilities are required, especially for plants that comprise on-site generation and station units.
