One of the major challenges in the design of a hybrid electric vehicle powertrain is the optimisation of the motor drive inverter. The load on the inverter depends on the driving cycle and the powertrain configuration. This in turn sets the rating of the inverter, from which the power devices can be chosen and the heatsink designed. There exists a fundamental trade off between device performance, heatsink size and reliability, critically depending on the device temperature throughout vehicle operation. Evaluation of the device temperature throughout a realistic driving cycle (mission profile) would greatly benefit inverter design for hybrid electric vehicle powertrains. Traditionally, inverter modeling has been carried out using circuit simulators, with either ideal switches or very basic device models representing the switching devices. While the use of simple device switching models results in rapid inverter simulation, necessary for long driving cycles of many minutes, such models are unable to predict device losses and the resulting temperature rise with sufficient accuracy. Therefore they cannot be used in inverter optimisation. The use of compact physics-based device models require simulation times of up to a few seconds for every device switching cycle. This paper presents an integrated framework for modelling the inverter performance in hybrid electric vehicle drives. Based in MATLAB/Simulink, it uses a novel method of decoupling the device and inverter simulation to maintain high accuracy of inverter power losses and device temperatures, and achieve faster than real time inverter simulation. Illustrations are given for mild and full hybrids for different driving cycles. The simulation framework offers the potential to rapidly improve the inverter and powertrain design process.
