This paper compares two nonlinear techniques that can be used for structural health monitoring. The first technique is based on magnitude bispectrum and the second technique uses the complex bispectrum. Both techniques are essentially nonparametric and thus are generic. As is the character of nonparametric methods these approaches are widely applicable. The goal is to provide technique that can to some sense quantify the degree of nonlinearity and so be used as indicators of structural faults. Paper concentrates on the comparison of two techniques exploiting the bispectrum as tool to detect nonlinearity. This comparison is conducted using measured data from the cracked and un-cracked compressor blades from a helicopter engine.
