Tailored Blanks are laser welded steel sheets, where the steel grades and the blank thicknesses of the single sheets can be varied, so that the final structure can be designed efficiently in view of stress, weight and costs. Within this article, an approach for a cost calculation for Tailored Blank applications is shown. By this approach, the impact on total body costs can be quantified. First, the process of Tailored Blank manufacturing will be explained briefly. After this introduction, the motivation to investigate the single, product related costs of a Tailored Blank application will be pointed out by an overview of average material and process cost for typical Tailored Blanks in automotive body and closures applications. Preparing the cost approach, all related cost issues starting form part engineering to the final assembly will be identified. By this approach, the costs of a Tailored Blank application can be compared with the costs of a conventional design with monolithic blanks. A complete cost analysis will be executed at the example of a front rail. The total costs of the Tailored Blank solution will be compared with the total costs of the conventional solution. Further cost comparison examples of a door and a side panel will also be shown using this cost approach. Finally the results will be summarized and evaluated.
