Most of the internal combustion engine phenomena are repeated during an engine cycle as many times as cylinders are present in the engine. This cyclic behavior influences the instantaneous angular speed (IAS) of the turbocharger. The design and development of the equipment that does the IAS measurement of the turbo-charger and implements algorithms for DFT calculation and for misfire and uneven injection detection are described. The equipment also measures the IAS of the crankshaft to perform a simultaneous comparison of classical methods of misfire detection. The designed equipment provides a high resolution and a bounded absolute error of the turbogroup IAS measurement and treats, in real-time, the collected data. The system is ready to use a sensing device with higher resolution, such as Micro-Epsilon turboSPEED-135. The implementation is feasible on a low-cost 8-bits microcontroller, so it could be applied to a production system to be widely installed on board commercial vehicles, providing a solution for automatic diagnosis and correction of the engine's operation.
