A crashworthiness characterization of automotive sheet steel materials has been conducted using two tests that simulate energy dissipation mechanisms during automotive impact. The first test mimics the single plastic fold formation that occurs during progressive crush of tubular structures. The simplicity of the experiment enables easy data acquisition and correlation with the finite element method simulations. In the second test configuration, progressive crushing of circular tubes is conducted with constant velocity loading using hydraulically driven equipment. Tube crush experiments were conducted using velocities within the range of quasi-static (0.06 m/s) to close to automotive impact (6 m/s). Strain and strain rate histories in the tests were measured using electric resistance strain gages. The gages were positioned at locations of plastic folds. The information developed provided high-quality experimental data for the development of guidelines for the extent of experimental programs required for characterization of material properties for crash simulations. The data are also used to develop specific modeling guidelines for impact modeling and accuracy assessment. The magnitudes and histories of measured strain rates are discussed as well as their implications on the finite element method (FEM) modeling approaches.
