Piezoelectric shunt damping has been described as a collocated control. Shunt damping has very low requirements compared to other control techniques. Only one single piezoceramic is necessary and the shunt can consist of passive elements only. However, the performance can be largely improved with negative capacitance shunts, which require energy for operation. Yet, the shunt has to be tuned to one structural vibration mode, and other modes may not be damped. In a complex eigenvalue analysis of the brake system, parametersets of the shunt could be found which stabilize the brake and suppress brake squeal. The theoretical results have been validated experimentally on a brake test rig.
