A strongly increasing functionality in today's passenger cars can be observed permanently. With the functionality, also the complexity of the electronic architecture of the vehicle is increased. The number of electronic control units today is closely related to the functionality. On the other hand, space requirements as well as wiring harness are important design and production factors for the car manufacturer. Reducing vehicle complexity with a given functionality or enhance functionality without increasing complexity is a major goal of current development activities. Furthermore, cost reduction without reduced performance is important also for safety relevant systems as airbag control and vehicle dynamics control. The possibility of merging passive and active safety system is addressed in the current paper. Goal of the ABplus approach is reduction of complexity and cost with the same or even improved functionality. The ABplus approach offers strong possibility to reduce the number of electronic components, wiring harness and space requirements on the transmission tunnel. Further opportunities are the synergetic use of power supply, and microC resources, as well as commonly used sensors. The complexity of the ABplus module is increased. Furthermore the system responsibility has to be defined clearly. The coordination effort between the suppliers of the brake system and the passive safety system is higher than with separate components. Once a standardized interface between the inertial sensor unit and the brake control unit is established this will be a standard procedure, as with many interfaces today. In the next step the merging systems will enhance their performance through further established data exchange. From this, the passive safety as well as the active safety will benefit for the goal of reduced fatalities and injuries caused by vehicle traffic.
