In this work a new simulation software package for modeling drive systems including electric components as well as mechanical parts is proposed, the SmartElectricDrives (SED) library. The SED library is developed in Modelica programming language. All the presented simulations are performed with Dymola, which is a commercial tool for simulating Modelica models by means of differential and algebraic equations. Due to the object oriented architecture of the SED library the user has all necessary components needed to simulate electric auxiliary drives at ones disposal. These components include electric machines, power sources, measurement devices, modern electric drive control algorithms and power electronics etc. Another software package, the SmartPowerTrains (SPT) library, which models the mechanical components placed in the power train of conventional vehicles, is developed parallel to the SED library. Using the SED library together with the Modelica standard library and the SPT library allows the simulation of applications such as electric water pumps, electric oil pumps, electric air conditioning, etc. Therefore, the SED library facilitates the investigation of single electric auxiliary drives, and furthermore, the evaluation of entire hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) concepts (e.g. in terms of efficiency improvement). Two simulations on different levels of abstraction built with the SED library are included in this work. First the simulation of electrical transient effects in a starter-generator speeding up a 2 liter Diesel engine (ICE) is showcased. A permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) regulated by field oriented control (FOC) is used as the starter-generator. Also a quasi stationary simulation of an electrically driven cooling system for a 1.9 liter Diesel ICE in an HEV environment is presented. For both simulations significant results are included.
