The need to integrate the air conditioning system of industrial vehicles with an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is becoming more and more important to assure comfort conditions to drivers when the vehicle doesn t travel, both due to energy saving and pollutions reduction, and security of the on-road behaviour of drivers after rest periods. The systems presently available on the market rarely meet the requirement of long distance drivers, particularly during the day stay in hot country climates. Furthermore these devices can be used only for a limited length of time, maximum a few hours. The present paper shows the activity of IVECO, supported by University of Rome Tor Vergata, Fiat Research Centre (C.R.F.) and WEBASTO, in developing a new system able to meet the driver s requirements in the most extreme ambient conditions existing in Europe, and to guarantee comfort conditions for at least 8 hours. An integrated parking and overnight cooling system has been developed and installed in a L.D. IVECO truck. The goal of the activity was to evaluate the vehicle integration problems and the performances of an electric motor driven A/C system, based on the same layout of the standard production A/C loop. A prototype has been manufactured and installed in a IVECO STRALIS truck and tested in a controlled thermal environment (climatic wind tunnel). The results in terms of thermal power (about 1000-1500W) and overall efficiency can be considered satisfactory and fulfil the specifications defined in the preliminary phase of the project. Further tests and developments of the system are expected to complete the research programme. Very good performances are expected when electric power supply will change from standard batteries to fuel cells, in terms of gas emission, noise and fuel consumption.
