The paper presents two applications of haptic technologies in the automotive domain which show how these rather novel technologies can increase the human computer interaction during the various steps of the design process. The first application aims at developing a system to generate digital shapes by manipulating haptic tools that resemble the physical ones, which the modelers use in everyday work. The second application is focused on the use of haptic interfaces to evaluate ergonomics aspects of virtual control boards. The authors have designed and developed the mentioned haptic devices; the device for shape modeling uses two FCS-HapticMasters equipped with an innovative strong and stiff 6 DOF device carrying haptic modeling tools. The second device is an 'ad hoc' mechatronic system able to simulate controls with rotary motions (knobs). The presented devices are the results of two research projects carried out at the KAEMaRT - Knowledge Aided Engineering & Manufacturing and Related Technologies (www.kaemart.it) Group of Politecnico di Milano. The preliminary tests performed on the system prototype have demonstrated the effectiveness of the approach and of the tool. The system is expected to be a major improvement for industrial design companies that will be able to shorten product design lifecycle, improving design quality, while preserving valuable skills of operators. The second research concerns an immersive VR system developed for ergonomics evaluation based on the integration of a customized haptic system and commercial tools. In particular, the authors have presented the haptic device implemented to simulate knob controls. Future activities include the definition of a methodology to evaluate results of virtual tests and the development of other customized haptic devices to simulate controls like sliders and buttons.
