To realize better air-conditioning performance, the location and shape of registers should be optimized with close examinations on the airflow in cabin at the first stage of the designing. Then, we have tried to develop a practical method to predict airflow velocity in a car cabin by using CFD. Our simulation model includes the steering and levers, because their locations influence the jet flow from registers toward occupants. To precisely predict the jet flow and its diffusion, we have arranged calculation mesh adequately and adopted the realizable k-epsilon model as a turbulence model. Consequently, a practical method has been successfully developed to predict the average airflow velocity around occupants and the average jet diffusion velocity to the rear seat with an error ratio of less than 10 %. By this method, furthermore, the influence of steering on the airflow was confirmed. It was our attempt to develop a prediction method with interior airflow velocity by applying CFD to optimize arrangements of registers and a steering. The followings were found adequate in order to estimate a diffusion of interior jet flow by means of precisely simulated model including registers and a steering: Mesh size for cabin interior; 32 mm or less, Turbulence model; Realizable k-epsilon model. In fact, this method was applied to 2 actual cars resulting in an error ratio of 10 % or less, consequently confirming a required accuracy for practical use. Furthermore, it was also confirmed how the steering is related to the airflow towards occupants. With accumulating actual utilization of this method, prediction of airflow in cabin with the effect of steering included will become possible, at and from the beginning of designing work even when no actual vehicles are available. Finally, we convince this method will be a valuable development tool for improvement of air-conditioning performance.
