Addressing aviation safety, statistics have shown, that a major part of accidents was caused by a chain of reasons, where the human operator was involved. The 'computerization' of the cockpit, which began in the late 70s, brought lots of highly specialized, but isolated systems for individual tasks. The heterogeneous design and the number of separated subsystems increased the workload of the aircrew. To increase safety and economy of aviation DLR is developing pilot assistance systems covering all flight phases 'gate to gate.' The Pilot assistant system is an integrated system with all required assistance functions under a single human/machine interface. An overall concept including a very specific system architecture was developed in order to provide pilot assistance during all phases of flight. The assistant functions are implemented in function modules grouped around a core system consisting of a central data pool and a module manager. For several tasks of flight guidance, a number of highly specialized modules is being developed and tested. In this report discussed are 2 main subsystems the Advanced Fligh Management System AFMS and the Taxi guidance system TARMAC-AS and then focus on the Enhanced Vision System which supports the crew especially under low visibility conditions in flight phases close to the ground like the approach and landing phase. Within the enhanced vision system (EVS), Information coming from weather independent sensors is combined with knowledge provided by terrain databases via data fusion technology. The full picture of the aircraft's external situation is presented using head up or head mounted displays.
