In this contribution at first general aspects of the fracture mechanical assessment of crack growth especially under Mixed Mode loading conditions will be discussed. This covers the determination of the crack growth direction as well as issues of stable or unstable crack growth. In the following those concepts will be extended to fatigue crack growth situations. Furthermore two different fracture mechanical events of damage will be shown, in which fatigue crack growth plays the decisive role. Those examples will be analysed by the means of fracture mechanics, whereby the fatigue crack growth i.a. is numerically simulated by the program system ADAPCRACK3D. In industrial practice often damage events in components and structures are observed, that can be traced back to extensive fatigue crack growth. The fracture mechanics is able to deliver appropriate concepts for the investigation of already existing crack cases as well as for the appropriate prediction of possible future crack growth. Since fatigue crack growth takes place under only small deformations, the concepts of linearelastic fracture mechanics are absolutely sufficient for an adequate description of the crack behaviour. If the basic fracture mechanical parameters like Delta Kth, KIc or the crack growth rate curve da/dN=f(Delta K) are known, the crack growth in structures can be simulated by the means of the finite element method, e.g. with the program ADAPCRACK3D. This is i.a. proven by the presented damage events in a hydraulic press and in a wheel tyre of a high speed train.
