The present article reports about the development of the world-first Pre-crash Safety (PCS) System for heavy duty trucks. This system gives warning to the driver in case there is a possibility of collision with preceding vehicles, and activates the brakes to mitigate damage in case there is a higher possibility of collision. The components of PCS System for the heavy duty truck consists of a Millimeter-wave Radar which detects front obstacles of host vehicles, a Yaw-rate Sensor, a Steering Wheel Angle Sensor which judges whether obstacles exist on same lane or not, PCS_ECU which judges the possibilities of rear-end collisions, Alarm Buzzer which alerts to drivers in case the system detects the possibility of a rear-end collision, and an Electronic Control Brake System (EBS) which control brakes electrically. To achieve the warning and activate the brakes with relatively early timing, a new algorithm was developed to correctly judge and the timing and the strength applying brakes was also optimized. With PCS System for heavy duty trucks, the reduction of the fatalities in accidents on the express way is highly expected.
