This paper describes a Yaw Stability Control functionality developed and implemented in a prototype vehicle. After a discussion of vehicle and tyre dynamics, the benefits of two powerful actuators brakes and active front steering for applying a yaw torque to the vehicle is theoretically analyzed. A control concept for the integration of the actuators engine, brakes and active front steering is developed and compared with production state of the art stability controllers actuated through engine and brakes. The most powerful actuators for vehicle yaw control are steering and brakes. The control authority of these actuators is very different. Steering should be the primary actuator in the handling region and the brakes should be the primary actuator in the stability region. A new control structure had been presented: Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Control with following advantages: The interfaces can be standardized, software components can be reused and one can solve the conflicting control targets. To conclude, one should use a consistent development method to achieve the target vehicle dynamics properties. For the development of active systems, one should use the same consistent approach.
