The presentation deals with crash management on an articulated train, designed to comply with the current TSI (Technical Specification for Interoperability) version. First the location of the energy absorption areas is explained, before presenting the principle adopted for this particular articulated train. The numerical simulations done before and after the tests are shown. These simulations are compared to experimental tests. At the end, the behaviour of this train in front of the deformable obstacle, which is involving one of the major changes between the current and the new version, is also shown. For an articulated train set, the total capacity of energy absorption can be placed in front of the first vehicle, under the condition that the force level is relatively low, which is usually the case for high-speed trains having a long nose. This unique location provides several advantages in respect to passive safety. The driver is kept in an undeformed cab, all the occupants are subjected to low decelerations, and the connexions between the vehicles are maintained. The complete validation process has been detailed, using numerical simulations and full scale test. The design for this articulated train, developed according to the current TSI, can be used for the next generation of trains which characteristics need to be compliant with the new version of the specification for interoperability.
