A longitudinally, QCW, laser diode pumped MOPA (master-oscillator-power-amplifier) system, consisting of a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG master oscillator and two optical amplifiers, has been developed. A maximum total output energy of 62 mJ has been demonstrated. Because of its efficiency, temperature insensitivity and potential of miniaturization, this system is appropriate for space applications. Figures show the setup of the MOPA with two double pass amplifiers; the calculated distribution of absorbed pump light on a cross-section of the amplifier rod at 803 nm and 808 nm for different lengths; simulation results of the percentage of pump power absorbed in 1% doped Nd:YAG crystals of different length for a pump diode bandwidth of 2.5 nm FWHM; the output energy versus pump power for single and double amplifier designs.
