Aluminium alloys are extensively used in the manufacturing of aircraft structures and components due to their excellent mechanical and corrosion resistant properties, as well as their lightweight characteristics. However, aluminium alloys are also susceptible to mechanical processing operations that can cause surface smearing, and consequently the possibility of closing up very fine surface discontinuities such as cracks. This paper contains the results of a fluorescent liquid penetrant study on surfaces that have been subjected to various mechanical surface processing (abrasion) operations that are frequently employed as a means of deburring, blending and polishing during the course of manufacturing a finished component. The effect these processes have on fluorescent penetrant indications when the test surfaces have or have not been subject to an etching operation following the mechanical processing operations is illustrated in this paper.
