The mixture formation process and quantitative mixture distribution in a direct-injection spark-ignition engine were investigated by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). An ideal type of stratified mixture distribution for stratified charge combustion is thought to be one that has a homogeneous concentration on the inside and clear boundary with the ambient air. A circulating flow concept is proposed here as a means of accomplishing this mixture distribution. A high-pressure fuel injector (up to 100 MPa) is installed in the center of the combustion chamber and fuel is injected toward a bowl in the piston crown. Circulating flow is produced in the piston bowl by the fuel itself, and this flow greatly contributes to improved mixing of the fuel and air. It has been found that a higher fuel injection pressure is more effective in obtaining a uniform stratified mixture distribution and also in preventing fuel film from forming on the piston surface. The procedure used for quantifying the stratified mixture distribution is briefly described.
