In most cases, the transmission gas pipelines in the northern regions of Russia are produced from straight-seam pipes with a diameter of 1020 and 1220 mm manufactured in Russia, and with a diameter of 1420 mm, mainly imported from abroad. The production of straight-seam large diameter pipes from high-quality sheet steel is the main advantage of these pipes. For spiral-seam pipes strengthened by heat treatment, increase of the strength of the pipe results in a large decrease of ductility. The spiral-welded joint contains residual stresses, which together with service loading (especially alternating loading) in the conditions of corrosive media greatly increase the extent of local corrosion of the zones of the welded joint. In the presence of residual stresses and a sharp angle of transition from the convex part of the welded joint to the parent metal, this section subjected to the effect of cyclic loading is a probable area of the start of failure of spiral-seam pipes during service. The formation of surface defects (cavities, cracks, mechanical heterogeneity of welded joints, regions of local plasticity) with a decrease of the wall thickness of the pipe may cause failure in the specific region without affecting the strength of the pipeline in other sections. The efficient operation of an oil pipeline was assured by calculating the pressure of hydraulic tests taking into account the results of theoretical investigations. After hydraulic test and repair of the pipeline, the number of failures, malfunctions of the system, spillage of oil, etc. were greatly reduced and recommendations were made for increasing the operating life of the pipeline to three years. The results of investigations for major overhaul, reconstruction, intra-pipe diagnostics, comparison of the load carrying capacity of straight-seam and spiral-seam large diameter pipes, etc., have made it possible to develop new SpiN and GOST standards.
