An inventive method of perfecting the production of critical parts has been developed at the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys, based on a number of procedures, models and patterns, also developed by the institute. Two of them, namely, 'The model of thermal state of ingots, billets and blanks' and 'The technique of a distant and noncontact temperature measurement of warmed objects', were implemented for research and improvement of production of railway wheels. The obtained temperature patterns over the entire surface of the ingot mould during pouring and solidifying of liquid steel, concurrently with the recording of them in the visible and infrared spectrums, made it possible to develop a new design of the ingot mould which creates conditions for horizontal crystallizing of metal with the result that the ingot is lacking zones of axial and extra-axial segregation. There were established thermal states of ingots and blanks at all stages of further treatment, namely, on heating in furnaces, on the line of hot forming (which consists of 5 production units), on heat treatment in furnaces. It was found that the blank is under conditions of thermocycling with the amplitude of temperature oscillation more than 100 deg C and the temperature difference between separate parts of the blank in hundreds of degrees Celsius. Along the line of hot forming (5 production units) there forms three natural isothermal sections, namely, before upsetting, under preforging, when passing the rolling. The obtained data on thermal state of blanks make it possible not only to competently form the technological process of hot forming, to improve the operating conditions of process equipment but to predict the formation of metal microstructure of the railway wheels
