Using simple resonant passive devices already known as Tags or RFIDs (radio frequency identifications) is a new wireless technique for monitoring the condition of aerospace structures. This is realized by modifying the inductive or capacitive elements of these devices in such a way that they are sensitive to humidity, hydroxylation, and corrosion as a sequence of ageing of primers and of lacquer coatings. The condition of structure materials and of the protective coatings will be indicated by a shift in the resonant frequency of the device. This technique will increase safety and will lead to the reduction of maintenance costs because some maintenance intervals could depend on the load of environmental influences, depending on climate conditions. Within further research modified RFID are going to be integrated into CFRP structures to control the curing and factory processes, mission loads and the condition during lifetime. The substantial advantages of the technique summarised are: a) wireless condition monitoring (Tags, RFID); b) wireless ED-code reading and marking (writing) - RFID; c) passive electronic devices with no electronic radiation in the passive state; d) low cost sensors and analyzing equipment; e) high potential for several applications, as: thin adhesive film devices; embeddable into multi axial CFRP; able to be put on to none ferromagnetic metal with special design; continuous data logging with inductive coupled removable, adhesively fixed ad on devices, supplied by battery.
