High performance materials used in aeronautics are often related to relatively complex structures of the manufactured parts. The non-destructive inspection of these complex built-up materials makes high demands on inspection equipment and techniques. In general, ultrasonic inspection methods turned out to be feasible NDI methods applicable to inspection of GLARE parts for in-production and in-service tasks. Whilst ultrasonic through transmission method is mostly applied to inspection of large GLARE parts during manufacturing the ultrasonic pulse/echo method is basically used for inspection of GLARE parts for in-service tasks. A well fitting method to cover several GLARE configurations as well as different damage scenarios is the ultrasonic pulse/echo phased array inspection method. This method is applied to non-scheduled maintenance tasks as, for instance, incidental damages. The result of a phased array inspection is a very clear and detailed image of the inspected area, provided the calibration of the instrument has been done according to related specifications. A high-capacity data acquisition and evaluation software is mandatory to perform a phased array inspection successfully.
