Intelligent safety systems consist of sensors, decision algorithms and actuators, which can detect potential contact between the host vehicle and other road users or obstacles, decide if a crash is unavoidable and eventually trigger the actuators. Injury risk to the car occupants is reduced as a result. While front and side crashes occur with comparable frequency, the risk of an injury from a side crash is much higher. This is due to the close distance between an occupant and the incoming object. For the same reason, existing in-crash sensing technology does not allow for timely deployment of collision mitigation measures. In the European funded project APROSYS, SP6 addresses this technology gap and develops a suitable integrated side pre-crash sensor and actuator system. Other European funded projects mainly address sensing technology to detect frontal impacts. The main objective of SP6 is a technology showcase of a combination of different advanced technologies to be developed for further crashworthiness improvement. Knowledge of state of-the-art technologies, advanced methods and design tools have to be applied to implement and evaluate the intelligent safety system. APROSYS sub project 6 develops an integrated side impact protection system. Its sensing system consists of a visible light stereo camera and a 24 GHz radar system. Sensor data are combined in a fusion step and a decision module decides adaptively, if and in which configuration the actuator system is deployed prior to a crash. Shape memory alloys are applied to meet the demanding timing requirements while maintaining reversibility. Multibody and FE simulations are used for concept choosing, development verification and evaluation.
