This paper presents an inter-vehicle communication system that reuses existing WLAN technology for safety related applications. In order to maximize throughput and minimize latency in the presence of hundreds of nodes, the protocol has to be adapted to reach acceptable performance in typical road scenarios. This paper highlights the specific communication requirements for a message dissemination application in a highly mobile scenario and focuses on one of the most challenging problems: reliable broadcasting. The work is based on well-known restricted flooding mechanisms, which use received signal strength information derived from one-hop neighbors to select the nodes that will forward the broadcast messages. Simulation results show that our solution improves network performances in terms of reachability, redundancy and average transmission power of the broadcast messages, and therefore makes the algorithm particularly suitable for sensor networks.
