This paper presents via analysis, the feasibility of a communication net for heavy-duty vehicles within platoon using wireless communication and information technology. The introduction of autonomous driver assistance systems in order to increase e. g. the highway traffic net capacity and to harmonize its flow are shown to be achievable when the control law (for the control of vehicles within platoon) includes an appropriate combination of communication structure and communication technology. This also satisfies the demand for string stability (for the motion of the platoon) and the requirement for minimizations of fuel consumption as well as the reduction of environmental pollution. This study is an extension of the interdisciplinary project 'Einsatzszenarien für Fahrerassistenz-Systeme im Güterverkehr und deren Bewertung' (EFAS), supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The interdisciplinary team located at RWTH Aachen University, working within the framework of 'Vorbereitende Maßnahmen für den praktischen Einsatz von Fahrerassistenzsystemen im Güterverkehr' (MFG), is developing a specifications sheet for a short- or medium-term realization of driver assistance systems for heavy-duty vehicles.
