A new methodology for studying of weld metal phase transformations is presented that is based on a single sensor differential thermal analysis technique. This methodology is applied for in-situ measurement of phase transformations and construction of continuous cooling transformation diagrams for as-solidifying E11018-MR and E6010-CMn steel weld metals. The results of the phase transformation and microstructure analyses have shown that the in-situ SS-DTA technique is highly sensitive to the thermal effects of transformation of all the low carbon and low alloy steel weld metal microconstituents. It even allows distingushing the transformation sequence of small amounts of microconstituents, which is not normally possible by dilatometric analysis. The magnitudes of the measured phase transformations thermal effects correlate very well with the amounts of the corresponding microconstituents in the microstructure. The SS-DTA technique provides a powerful tool for experimental study and modeling of weld metal phase transformations and microstructure evolution. In the development of welding consumables, the in-situ monitoring of the weld metal phase transformations can help in optimizing the weld metal microstructure, mechanical properties and weldability. The in-situ SS-DTA technique and the in-situ weld metal CCT diagrams can provide the welding engineer with a reliable tool for achieving optimal weld metal microstructure in the development and testing of welding procedures.
