Various innovative materials/synthesis techniques as applied to the light metals aluminum, magnesium, and titanium and to the intermetallic titanium aluminides are now available. The most common of these techniques include ingot metallurgy (I/M), powder metallurgy (P/M), semi-solid processing (SSP), titanium extraction, rapid solidification (RS), spray deposition (SD), mechanical alloying (MA), plasma processing, physical vapor deposition (PVD), electron beam (EB) processing, comparison of synthesis/processing techniques, and synthesis of in-situ TixAly/Al2O3 composites. Potential applications of these techniques are enormous but the most significant are in the automobile and aerospace industries.
