Automotive wheel discs made of casting aluminium alloy AlSi11 damaged under operation were examined. The expertise was aimed at explaining reasons of the failure and included microscopic examination and mechanical testing. The examination revealed significant inhomogeneity of the material structure characterized by presence of correctly modified eutectic areas (alpha+Si) and needle-shaped primary silicon crystals. The alpha solid solution areas created oblong non-isolated dendritic inclusions. Numerous porosities were observed on cross-section of the discs. The fatigue cracks were initiated in under-surface areas of eutectic mixture and primary nonmodified silicon crystals. Further crack propagation occurred through elongated boundaries of alpha dendrites and through porosity areas. The material with so unfavourable structure showed low mechanical strength.
