Dynamic responses of a two-axle truck to self-excitations arising from wheel defects, namely the wheel unbalance and radial run-out are investigated. Dynamic tyre forces are determined using an adaptive footprint tyre model that could incorporate both types of wheel defects. The influences of wheel unbalance and non-uniformity are derived in terms of unweighted and frequency weighted vertical and pitch accelerations, and dynamic tyre loads, as functions of magnitudes of wheel defects in conjunction with variations in speed and road roughness. The dynamic responses show the most significant effects of both wheel defects under smooth-road excitations, and could thus contribute significantly to ride discomfort. The relative effects of wheel unbalance tend to diminish under excitations arising from rough roads.
