Lithion, Inc, under Phase I of NAVSEA contract N00164-03-D-6923, has designed and delivered a 150V, 85.7 kWh prototype battery, complete with all control electronics, to meet the requirements of the US Navy's Advanced Seal Delivery System, ASDS. Lithion has subsequently been awarded the full production contract to deliver a complete ship set to meet the 300 V, 1.2 MWhr requirement. The ASDS is a state of the art submersible designed to transport US Navy SEALs. The 1/2 ton prototype battery consisted of one assembly in a 77-inch long and 18-inch diameter pressure vessel. This battery was based on work done in the development of true prismatic 55 Ah and 200 Ah lithium ion cells. The modular design has undergone extensive structural modeling, thermal modeling and safety testing to demonstrate that a battery of this size was viable. The design takes advantage of the high-energy efficiency of the lithium ion system and modularity to overcome the problems of heat accumulation common with large batteries. This approach demonstrates a new design concept for many rechargeable large battery systems by providing an alternative to large numbers of small cells in series parallel combination.
