Current forward facing (FF) child restraint designs use LATCH and ISOFTX systems to couple the restraint to the vehicle. Rear facing (RF) child restraints, however, have multiple coupling methods that vary by manufacturer and country of origin. Sled tests were performed with the CRABI12 month dummy in six different RF attachment conditions. The performance of the rear facing child restraints (restraint kinematics, head accelerations, and neck loads) was highly dependent on the design used to couple the child restraint to the vehicle. Although the amount of rotation allowed by a RF child restraint system will affect head accelerations, the timing of this rotation may be more important in reducing head injury measures. The benefit of increased restraint excursion (rotation) is lost if the structures which prevent this rotation do not act until late in the pulse. Early support of the dummy results in more ride-down with the vehicle and lower acceleration values. The CRABI12 month dummy measured some high neck extension moments in the RF restraint, which did not correspond with high extension angles. These results are probably due to the rigid connection between the head and upper neck. Modifications to this joint may improve the biofidelity, but other neck measurements are likely still valid. The results were also compared to a FF LATCH restraint.
