As full-line automobile manufacturers committed to addressing global fuel consumption concerns, environmental issues, and consumer needs, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and BMW Group have embarked on a cooperation that will develop a Two-Mode Hybrid system, offering the consumer choice and enabling broad application. Even as it is now clearly recognized that hybrid vehicles have substantial benefits to address these challenges, a number of questions still need to be answered. From our point of view the two most important are: What is the right hybrid technology approach? How can hybrid development and marketing be a legitimate business case? The Two-Mode Hybrid developed by the Global Hybrid Cooperation addresses the issues of the input split EVT by adding a second EVT mode. This second mode is a compound spit EVT mode. The Two-Mode Hybrid is realized by adding planetary gear sets and two clutches to the input power split EVT. When the first clutch is applied and the second clutch is open the system operates as an input split EVT as described earlier. When the second clutch is applied and the first clutch is released the system operates as a compound split EVT. At some point in the speed range there is a shift to the second EVT mode. This is a synchronous shift involving only torque transfer between elements and no changes in speed. The second EVT mode is the compound split EVT mode and provides additional mechanical points and allows for lower power transmission though the electrical path throughout the operating speed of the vehicle. These additional mechanical points are critical to meeting the objectives of the Two-Mode Hybrid. The highest mechanical point can be positioned to optimize efficiency during high speed cruising such highway or autobahn driving, and the mechanical point of the input split mode can be positioned to better optimize lower speed efficiency. To achieve the highest overall efficiency, we want to channel as much power mechanically as possible while retaining full hybrid functionality. This approach reduces both the electrical losses and the size of electric motors necessary. The creation of a shared technology platform for hybrid drives will allow more efficient integration of the best technologies, strengthening the innovative potential of all participating companies.
