The effect of swirl combinations on the spray dispersion characteristics of a prefilming airblast atomizer with three coaxial swirlers was assessed in the present study. The spatial distribution of the spray properties was investigated mainly by means of the interferometric laser imaging technique (ILIDS). In the case of the counter-swirl configurations of the outer swirler pair, relatively large number of droplets in the inner region of the spray are observed compared with the co-swirl cases. In addition, the radial peak of Sauter-mean-diameter (SMD) appears in the counterswirl cases, whereas, in the co-swirl cases, the SMD shows monotonic increase with radius in the region where the effect of the center swirler is considered to be small. The spray dispersion characteristic was further investigated by considering the behavior of two different droplet size classes, in terms of Stokes number based on the mean swirl motion. The basic dispersion characteristics mentioned above could be understood by simply superimposing the characteristics of those results. The mean velocity vector plots for these size classes also help the better understanding of the droplet motion. Focusing on the combination of the outer swirler pair, the radial distributions of the droplet number count measured by the ILIDS and the mean circumferential velocity of the gas-phase and the droplets of the two size classes measured by the LDA and the PDA were also compared. The difference of the spray dispersion characteristics between co-swirl and counter-swirl cases can be interpreted by investigating the relative position of the peak of the droplet number count to that of the circumferential velocity shear layer which governs the centrifugal motion of the considerable proportion of droplets.
