Numerical modelling is of increasing importance for the technical development of liquid fuel combustion processes. However, experimental results are still necessary to validate and adapt the models to the individual devices in order to determine an appropriate modelling scheme. For CFD simulations, single-component model fuels like n-dodecane are usually considered, since the vaporization and ignition properties of multi-component fuels are too difficult to assess up to now. In addition to the pressure distribution and local surface temperatures, the gas temperature and the oxygen/nitrogen ratio inside the combustion chamber of an automotive auxiliary heating system has been determined simultaneously using a temporal high resolving laser measurement technique (CARS). Measurements have been performed for n-dodecane for full and part load operation. Experimental data for standard diesel fuel has been recorded to evaluate the transfer possibility of n-dodecane simulations to real fuel conditions. The simulations have been performed with different turbulence and combustion models for stationary conditions. In a first step, a 2-layer k-s turbulence model combined with an eddy break-up combustion model was applied. The calculated temperature distribution across the combustor is close to the measured values but with some significant discrepancies. More sophisticated models like the SST turbulence model and the flamelet combustion model are currently under investigation.
