Time- and cost-efficient development processes in the automotive industry are often based on the application of modem IT-supported engineering tools. Computer aided three dimensional design and calculation methods are widespread and well introduced in component development and digital mock-up (DMU) processes, following conventional development strategies in principle. This publication introduces an enhanced design and development instrument, which bases on the 3D CAD software package CATIA V5. The presented tool enables the full parametric generation of an automotive layout model, which includes all characteristic data of a concept vehicle, even at an early project phase. The 3D model is controlled by an external data sheet, which contains all the required parameters and serves as a customer friendly data collector. A start model for the vehicle visualization is generated by means of completely parameterized geometry elements, with an external parameter control of characteristic dimensions and values enabling the integration of databases, automotive standard tables and - due to the open architecture of the concept tool - customer specific input information. Especially at an early stage of the conceptual design, this method allows 3D CAD based variant studies involving the ergonomic design and safety data as well as existing vehicle components and requirements concerning legislation boundaries. This tool is also provided for the implementation of photos or design sheets into the 3D model, enabling comparative studies of competing car concepts in respect of configuration solutions or legislation related components. The significantly reduced design and time effort for packaging studies and their optimization on the parameterized digital mock-up result in a quick generation of basic data for feasibility studies and customer discussions.
